It is important that you do not just focus on what a child sees, but also what they hear, smell, taste, and feel in all environments. We want a child to learn how to use all their senses and generalize them into the community. You can start with identifying pictures and contriving situations that relate to water within the home. Then move into a more natural type of teaching with questions on what you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste in the community. Please see below for some example programs! “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.” ~Edwin Powell Hubble *SD is the discriminating stimulus, which means anything that you say or do immediately before the target response. This ultimately is what you want a child to learn to hear, see, feel, smell, or touch prior to the expected response. Discrete Trial Training in the home: Program: Tacting: Senses: Sight Target: Identifying Seeing Water (in pictures) SD: (What you do as the teacher): Show a picture of water in a variety of different environments “What do you see?” or “What is it?” Expected response: Child will say “I see water” or “It's water” or “Water”. The expected response is depending on the child's current level of communication. Program: Tacting: Senses: Hearing Target: Hearing Water (contrived) SD: Turn on the sink and say, “What do you hear?” or “What is that sound?” Expected response: Child will say “I hear water running” or “I hear water” or “It's water” or “Water” The expected response is depending on the child's current level of communication. Program: Tacting: Senses: Feeling Target: Feeling Water (in the home) SD: Turn on the sink and have the child feel the water. Say, “What do you feel?” or “What are you touching?” Expected response: Child will say “I feel water” or “It's water” or “Water”. The expected response is depending on the child's current level of communication. Program: Tacting: Senses: Taste Target: Taste Water SD: Give a cup of water to the child and say, “What do you taste?” or “What are you drinking?” Expected response: Child will say “I taste water” or “Its water” or “Water”. The expected response is depending on the child's current level of communication. Program: Tacting: Senses: Smell *Sometimes you cannot target all the senses for every target and this is okay! Move into the Natural Environment: Sight: Walk around the park and point to the water in the fountain you are sitting by and say, “What is that?” or “What do you see?”. Hear: Walk around the fountain and say, “What do you hear?” Feel: Touch the water in the fountain and have your child touch the water. Say, “What do you feel?” Taste: Find a community water fountain that is for drinking and take a sip of water. Then have your child take a sip. Say, “What do you taste?” Smell: This does not apply, but you can work on other senses you smell in this environment! If you are looking for a BCBA Supervisor in Cleveland, Ohio, Email me!Reinforcement can be anything (I.e. Toy 🚗, 🍕, teddy 🐻, 💃🏻, jumping on the trampoline, bouncing a 🏀, a parents or siblings attention, iPad, or a tv show). ❤️😝 It can also be removing something like work time, playing with a non-preferred peer, or playing with a non-preferred toy. .
. Here is one example of adding something a child likes after a preferred behavior ( #positivereinforcement ) 1️⃣. A child 👶🏼 likes a ball🏀. 2️⃣The adult says, "Ball" while holding the ball out of arms reach of the 👶🏼 3️⃣. A 👶🏼 says, "Ball!" 4️⃣. The child👶🏼 IMMEDIATELY gets the 🏀 to play with! 5️⃣. The child👶🏼 getting the 🏀 as a#consequence to the child👶🏼 saying, "Ball" WILL INCREASE the probability of the child👶🏼 saying "Ball" in the future in order to get the 🏀!! *️⃣This also means that you would not give the 👶🏼 the 🏀 if they did NOT echo, "Ball." This sets clear expectations for a 👶🏼! . . Make sure that you are mindful of each child's needs and developmental level! ❤️👶🏼✨🦋

Replacement Behaviors: Make sure you are only reinforcing the behaviors that you would like to see increase in the future! This means the appropriate behavior MUST REPLACE the challenging behavior's FUNCTION! Behaviors do not just go away. They are ALWAYS replaced. We just need to teach what is the most appropriate replacement behavior for the challenging behavior.
EXAMPLE: The child pulls the cats tail and the adult yells, "Do NOT do that!" The child continues to pull the cats tail in the future. This means the behavior of pulling the tail is ATTENTION maintained. Now let's replace this with giving attention to the child petting the cats head. This means no access to the animal at times when the adult cannot be around to supervise. Then the adult will prime the child: "pet the cat like this! Do this!" The child pets😻 (can use physical support) and then give tons of praise! Throw a huge party!🎉 Continue to praise any instances that is observed and make sure to practice practice practice!
